Kate Beeching (Bristol):
The growing popularity of particles in French This paper gives an overview of the results of my research into the pragmatic functions and distributional frequencies of pragmatic particles in French, such as bon, quand même, hein and quoi. I hope to illustrate the usefulness of corpus-based sociolinguistic survey approaches in the investigation of semantic change. It will be argued that, though they are often decried as 'parasites',fillers or tics, these small particles serve a vital role in oiling the wheels of ordinary everyday social interaction and, because of this, have a tendency to rise in frequency.
