Abstract

Cédric Krummes (Sheffield):
The Luxembourgish Modal Particle zwar

Based on a data-driven study of modal particles and discourse markers, this paper examines zwar as found in a Luxembourgish e-mail word-corpus and in a Luxembourgish corpus of plays and film scripts. There are two sides to the study: on the one hand, frequencies per 1,000 words will be determined (similar to Möllering 2004) as well as its proportions (see Chanet 2003), and on the other hand, its uses will be observed. Whereas German zwar has only the propositional meaning of an adverb, such as in the sentence Du bist zwar schneller, aber ich bin vor dir! (as seen on bumper stickers) or can be used in conjunction with und to signal something specifically, Luxembourgish has also pragmaticalised (see Dostie 2004) zwar into the non-propositional uses of a modal particle and of an answer particle.
